Objective: This study was carried out to obtain data about weight status and nutritional habits of the students in Istanbul University, the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, according to their self-reports. Materials and methods: In a sample of 159 healthy university students, (54 of whom were boys and 105 were girls; mean age was 19.2 +/- 0.9 years), intake of macronutrients and micronutrients were assessed from 3-day selfreported food records by using BEBIS nutrition software program. These data were compared with Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). Results: According to body mass indices (BMI), subjects were classified as normal (80.5%), underweight (13.8%) and overweight (5.7%). In general, energy intake was found to be inadequate and the percentage of energy distribution in the young women and the young men, derived from carbohydrates, proteins and fats were as follows: 48%, 16%, and 36% and 52%, 16% and 32%, respectively. Reported intakes of folic acid, iron and calcium were most likely to be inadequate for the young women; calcium, fiber and magnesium were inadequate for the young men, compared with the 2/3 of RDA. The young men consumed higher amounts of all nutrients except for vitamin C compared to the young women. Conclusion: The students' daily intakes of energy, fiber, folate, iron, calcium, and magnesium were insufficient. The weights of the majority were normal according to BMI; while among female students underweight was more common.en_US
