ABSTRACT Master Thesis BATS OF DUPNİSA CAVE SYSTEM (MAMMALIA: CHİROPTERA) Trakya University Institute of Science Department of Biology With this research which was realized between April 2002 and January 2004 with 29 times monthly periodic visits to Dupnisa Cave System (Sulu Cave, Kuru Cave and Kız Cave) locating in boundary of Sarpdere village (Krrklareli-Demirköy), totally 1 1 bat species of which 4 species {Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, R. hipposideros, R. euryale and R. mehelyi) belong to Rhinolophidae family and 7 species {Myotis myotis, M. blythii, M. emarginatus, M. mystacinus, M. capaccinii, Miniopterus schreibersii and Plecotus auritus) belong to Vespertilionidae family from suborder Microchiroptera of order Chiroptera were determined. Rhinolophus mehelyi (Kuru and Kız Cave) and Plecotus auritus (Kuru Cave) are new records for Dupnisa Cave System. 4 species (M daubentoni, M. bechsteinii, M. nattereri and Barbastella barbastellus) recorded in Dupnisa Cave System in former studies weren't found in this study. It was also determined that P. auritus has existed in Dupnisa Cave System coincidentally at the time of invistegation. With this study, bat species of Dupnisa Cave System have been increased to 15. Bats in Dupnisa Cave System have been counted during monthly periodic visits and according to this countings, months in which population density was the highest (In Sulu Cave, January 2003: 33.257 and January 2004: 44.470; In Kız Cave, January 2003: 9.556 and January 2004: 10.130; In Kuru Cave, July 2002: 5.424 and August 2003: 6778) were determined. The highest total population density was recorded as 42.841 (in January 2003) and 54.653 (in January 2004) in Dupnisa Cave System. 4 Species -M. schreibersii (81 %), M. blythii (7 %), R. euryale (7 %), R. ferrumequinum (4 %)- constitue 99 % of population of bats found in Dupnisa Cave System. While 67 % of bat population only uses Sulu Cave to spend the winter, 14 % ofIV them uses Kuru Cave to bring forth young and breeding and 19 % of them uses Kız Cave both to spend the winter and to bring forth young and breeding. According to these findings, that Dupnisa Cave System is used by 81 % of total bat population much more to spend the winter and used by 1 9 % of total bat population much less to bring forth young and for breeding as shelter was determined. Being determined that Dupnisa Cave System has 15 bat species which is 42,85 % of 35 bat species in Turkey shows that Dupnisa Cave System has a rich species variety and large population density. On the basis of this research, a visit schedule has been prepared for Dupnisa Cave System of which some part is already open to turizm and some suggestions have been made for conservation of cave and bats.
