dc.description.abstractNEYİ ÖLÇERİZ, NASIL ÖLÇERİZ: TRAKYA ÜNİVERSİTESİ, İNGİLİZ DILI EĞİTİMİ BÖLÜMÜ, HAZIRLIK SINIFLARI İÇİN DİL YETERLİK SINAVI HAZIRLANMASI ÖZET Ölçme ve değerlendirme, eğitim sürecinin, eğitimin kendisi kadar önemli bir parçasıdır. Ölçme, eğitim sürecinde bireye kazandırılması öngörülen hedef davranışların ne ölçüde kazanıldığını sembollerle gösterme işlemidir. Değerlendirme ise eğitim sisteminin son öğesidir, ve sistemde bir aksama olup olmadığım, varsa bunun nereden kaynaklandığını bildiren dolayısıyla aksayan yanların düzeltilmesine olanak sağlayan bir süreçtir. Öğrencinin bilgisini değerlendirmek, her ne kadar her öğretmenin oldukça sık yapması gereken bir iş olsa da, iyi bir sınav hazırlamak, çok fazla zaman ve emek isteyen bir işlemdir. İyi bir sınav hazırlamak için, öncelikle sınavın amaçlan, sınavı alacak öğrenciler, hedef dil kullanım sahası ve buradaki çeşitli uygulamalar, ve ölçülecek olan yapılar, detaylı bir şekilde tanımlanır. Daha sonra bu tanımlara dayanarak, ve geçerlilik, güvenirlik gibi test nitelikleri göz önünde bulundurularak hazırlanacak sınavın metot ve içeriğine karar verilir. Bu tez çalışması, Trakya Üniversitesi, Eğitim Fakültesi, İngiliz Dili Eğitimi Bölümünde uygulanmış olan bir araştırmayı içermektedir. Araştırmanın amacı, İngiliz Dili Eğitimi bölümünde hazırlık sınıflarında muafiyet sınavı ve sene sonu sınavı olarak uygulanmak üzere, öğrencilerin bölümdeki dersleri başarıyla takip edebilmeleri için gereken İngilizce seviyesini ölçen bir dil yeterlik sınavı hazırlamaktı. Yabancı Dil yeterlik sınavının hazırlanmasında öğrenci ihtiyaçları baz alınacağından, araştırma, ihtiyaç analizi üzerine kurulmuştur. Hedef dil ortamım tanımlamak ve ihtiyaçları belirlemek üzere bölüm öğrenci ve öğretim elemanlarınaanketler verilmiş, öğretim elemanlarıyla görüşmeler yapılmış, ders gözlemleri ve belge taramaları yapılmıştır. Veriler 'nitel' olarak analiz edilerek hazırlanacak olan sınavın bileşenlerinin tanımlanmasında kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, Trakya Üniversitesi, İngiliz Dili Eğitimi Bölümünde Hazırlık Sınıfı İngilizce muafiyet sınavında kullanılabilecek soru tipleri ve içerikleri, öğrenci ihtiyaçları doğrultusunda belirlenmiş, ve okuma, yazma ve dinleme bölümlerinden oluşan bir sınav hazırlanmıştır. dc.description.abstract11 WHAT TO TEST, HOW TO TEST: LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST DESIGN IN THE PREPARATORY CLASSES OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING DEPARTMENT AT TRAKYA UNIVERSITY SUMMARY This study describes a research that was conducted at Trakya University with the aim of constructing a language proficiency test in line with the requirements of the English Language Teaching Department, to be used as pre and post-test for Preparatory Year students. It was hypothesized that, ready-made tests do not meet the English Language requirements of Trakya University, ELT Department students. There is a need for a proficiency test, which is designed according to the needs of this community. Evaluation is done by using measurement instruments such as tests, which are designed to elicit a specific sample of an individual's behaviour. Tests are mainly classified into four types according to their purposes: 1. Proficiency tests, which are designed to measure people's ability in a language regardless of any training they may have had in that language, 2. Diagnostic tests, which are used to identify students' strengths and weaknesses in order to ascertain what further teaching is necessary, 3. Placement tests, which are used to provide information that will help to place students in the part of the teaching programme most appropriate to their abilities, and 4. Achievement tests, which are directly related to language courses, having the purpose of establishing how successful individual students, group of students, or the courses themselves have been in achieving the objectives. (Hughes 1989: 9-14) In order to develop a test, the purposes, test takers, target language use domain and task types, and the constructs to be measured need to be identified and described indetail. Then, the test needs to be formed on the basis of these descriptions, considering the test qualities, which make the test useful. This study was an action research, which was done by using qualitative methods. There were two main parts in the study. The first part was the needs analysis done with interviews, questionnaires, document analysis and classroom observations, in order to describe the requirements of the target domain. Data collected in needs analysis was used in filling out the framework of test development. In the second part of the study, the blueprint of the proficiency test was developed, on the basis of the descriptions done during needs analysis. This study is hoped to be enlightening for the other researchers on the field since it shows the steps to be taken in the construction of a language proficiency test. Key Words 1. Evaluation 2.
