Today human life is getting longer by the help of new developments in technology and medicine. 20 % of the European population was 65 years old and older than 65 years by the year 2000. According to last population count in Turkey, 5.6% of the population was 65 years old and older than 65 years in 2000. Hypertension is a community health problem and it's prevelance is increasing with increasing age. According given data, 50 % of the people who are older than 65 years had hypertension. It has been thought that hypertension has responsibility of 50% of mortality and 70 % of morbidity in elderly. Hypertension in elderly is seen as isolated sistolic hypertension, pseudohypertension and white coat hypertension. Hypertension is a severe disease that could be controlled by early diagnosis but also it could lead to ischemic heart diseases and serebrovasculer diseases which had fatal complications when diagnosed lately. A good planning nursing care in elderly hipertensive patients can be helped with shortening convalescence, providing treatment compliance and increasing life quality by providing life style modification. The most common nursing diagnoses are: knowledge deficit related to therapy regimen and disease control process, uncompliance to therapy related to side effects of the prescribed drugs, fluid volume deficit related to diuretic use, changes in tissue perfusion. The main goal of the care is let the patient know the therapy regimen and the disease process, participate the patient to his/her self-care and prevent the complications. In this article; the importance of hypertension in elderly, types of hypertension and nursing care of the hypertensive patient will be discussed.en_US
