Öğe Activities of daily living, quality of life, social support and depression levels of elderly individuals in Turkish society(Pakistan Medical Assoc, 2015) Unsar, Serap; Dindar, Ilknur; Kurt, SedaObjective: To determine activities of daily living, quality of life, social support and depression levels of elderly individuals and the factors affecting each of these items. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2009 to June 2012 in Edirne, Turkey, and included elderly individuals over 60 years of age. Data was collected using a survey form, the Katz Activities of Daily Living Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Data was analysed using Spearman's correlation analysis. Results: Of the 912 subjects in the study, 509(55.8%) were females and 402(44.2%) were males, with an overall mean age of 68.05 +/- 6.6 years (range: 60-94 years). Besides, 644(70.6%) of the subjects were married and 595(65.2%) were living with their spouse. The levels of social support and activities of daily living of elderly individuals with a high quality of life were higher, and their levels of depression were lower (p<0.05). Conclusions: Older age, chronic health problems and polypharmacy should be taken into account when planning healthcare services for the elderly to ensure that they maintain a better quality of life.Öğe Assessment of symptom control in patients with cancer in Northwestern Turkey(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2011) Kurt, Seda; Unsar, SerapAim: The main purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare symptoms occurring before and after chemotherapy treatment and to investigate the factors affecting those symptoms. The secondary purpose was to determine the most commonly occurring symptoms experienced by the patients with cancer after chemotherapy. Methods: Fifty inpatients and outpatients receiving chemotherapy for the first time with various cancer diagnoses and hospitalized in the oncology unit of Trakya University Medical Faculty Hospital between July 2006 and April 2007 were attended to the study. Data were collected using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS). Results: It was discovered that symptoms of fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, impaired sense of wellbeing, changes in skin and nails, stomatitis and numbness in hands among chemotherapy patients increased by a statistically significant margin after treatment (p < 0.05). Post-chemotherapy symptoms increased markedly (p < 0.05) among patients within groups determined by age, gender, marital status, stage of cancer and date of diagnosis. Cross-group comparisons of post-chemotherapy participants analyzed in terms of marital status, clinical stage of disease, and date of diagnosis revealed that fewer symptoms (drowsiness and shortness of breath) increased compared to other symptoms measured along with treatment (p < 0.05). Conclusion: We conclude that by considering personal characteristic (i.e. age, gender, etc.) as well as disease-related characteristics (i.e. clinical stage of the disease, etc.), individual nursing care might significantly contribute to the alleviation and management of symptoms. Therefore, it is important to know the attitudes of midwives' and nurses' towards people living with HIV/AIDS. The aim of this descriptive and cross-sectional study is to assess the attitudes of Turkish midwives and nurses working at hospitals to people living with HIV/AIDS and to identify factors that affect these attitudes. A group of 46 midwives and 192 nurses working in hospitals were included in the study. Data were collected through AIDS Attitude Scale. Age, professional experience, number of children and marital status influenced the attitudes of the participants towards people living with HIV/AIDS. We concluded that higher level of education appear to positively influence the attitudes of the participants. Education programmes including evidence-based nursing implications might be planned to improve positive attitudes and to prevent stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS.Öğe Bir Üniversite Hastanesine Başvuran Jinekolojik ve Meme Kanserli Hastalarda Tamamlayıcı Sağlık Yaklaşımları Kullanımı(2019) Kurt, Seda; Süt, Hatice Kahyaoğlu; Küçükkaya, BurcuBu çalışmada, bir üniversite hastanesine başvuran jinekolojik ve meme kanserli hastalarda Tamamlayıcı Sağlık Yaklaşımları (TSY)kullanım durumlarının araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Older participants had lower positive attitudes toward cancer screenings and healthy life awareness. Higher education level participants displayed more positive attitudes toward cancer screenings. The higher the level of education and income, the higher the cancer information overload. When their cancer information overload increased, their positive attitudes toward cancer screenings and their healthy life awareness, in turn, decreased. As their healthy life awareness increased, they displayed more positive attitudes toward cancer screening, as well. As the participants' awareness in change, socialization, responsibility, and nutrition subscales of healthy life awareness scale increased, they had more positive attitudes toward cancer screenings.ConclusionConsequently, it was determined that the participants had a high level of positive attitudes toward cancer screenings, a moderate level of cancer information overload, and a high level of healthy life awareness.Öğe Correlation of self-efficacy and symptom control in cancer patients(Springer, 2022) Kurt, Seda; Altan Sarikaya, NihanObjective This cross-sectional study was planned to evaluate the self-efficacy and symptom control of cancer patients and to determine the factors affecting them. Methods The sample of the study consisted of 329 cancer patients who were treated in the Medical Oncology Clinic of a university hospital between April and June 2019 and accepted to participate in the study. Data were collected using the Patient Characteristics Information Form, Cancer Behavior Inventory-Short Version (CBI-SV), and Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS). Percentage, mean, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance were used in the analysis of the data. Results The mean CBI-SV score of the patients was 79.10 +/- 17.55. It was determined that the highest mean score of ESAS of the patients was in the symptom of fatigue (3.53 +/- 2.81). Some symptoms were statistically lower in patients with good income, who are working, and who are non-smokers. Also it was determined that the self-efficacy levels of the patients with good income and quitting smoking were higher (p < 0.05). At the same time, as the patients' self-efficacy scores increased, the severity of the symptoms they experienced decreased statistically (p < 0.05). Conclusion It was found that the patients' self-efficacy score was above the moderate level, the most intense symptom experienced by the patients was fatigue, and the severity of the symptoms decreased as the patients' self-efficacy level increased. In line with these results; the symptoms, self-efficacy perceptions, and affecting factors of cancer patients should be evaluated by nurses at regular intervals, and care and consultancy services should be provided.Öğe Evaluation of symptom control and functional quality of life in Turkish patients with cancer during chemotherapy(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2022) Ertin, Berkay; Kurt, SedaPurpose: This study was designed to evaluate the severity of symptoms, functional quality of life, and related factors experienced by Turkish cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Methods: The study was carried out with 430 patients at a medical oncology clinic. The data were collected using a personal and disease-related characteristics questionnaire, the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and the Functional Life Scale-Cancer (FLIC).Results: The three symptoms experienced most by patients were nausea (91.2%), depression (89.1%), and anxiety (87.7%). The mean FLIC total score of patients with cancer was 86.26 +/- 23.15. Age, ECOG performance score, pain, nausea, depression, and a decreased sense of well-being independently affected the FLIC score (p < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between ESAS and FLIC scores (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Nausea and psychological symptoms are common in Turkish patients with cancer. The more severe the symptoms, the worse the functional quality of life. Age, ECOG performance score, pain, nausea, depression, and decreased sense of well-being affect Turkish cancer patients' functional quality of life. We conclude that healthcare professionals should evaluate symptoms experienced by their patients and plan appropriate nursing interventions to address the symptoms experienced by Turkish patients with cancer.Öğe Hemşirelerin kendini gerçekleştirme düzeyleri ve etkileyen etmenler(2011) Ünsar, Serap; Kostak, Melahat Akgün; Kurt, Seda; Erol, ÖzgülGiriş: Kendini gerçekleştirme, insan davranışlarını yöneten bir güdü olduğu kadar, erişilmeye çalışılan bir gelişme düzeyi olarak da tanımlanmaktadır. The aim of this study was to explore the pain experiences of patients with advanced cancer and how they manage with pain, and to present a view of pain management approaches of nurses from the perspectives of the patients. Methods: This was a qualitative descriptive study of sixteen hospitalized patients with advanced cancer. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with patients. Data were analysed by Colaizzi's phenomen-logical method. Results: This study found that patients with advanced cancer who had pain experienced anxiety, helplessness, hopelessness and many restrictions in daily life as well as inability to manage with pain. Most of the patients with advanced cancer were not satisfied with their nursing care with regard to pain management. The themes that emerged were pain perception and experiences, effects of pain on daily life, pain management and management strategies and the patients' perspectives about nursing approaches to pain. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the difficulties of patients with advanced cancer who experienced pain in their daily lives, yet lack pain management strategies. Furthermore, nurses' caring approaches to patients with advanced cancer who experienced pain was found inadequate. Oncology nurses should provide educational interventions in order to enhance knowledge and skills about pain assessment and non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic strategies used in pain management.Öğe Reflexology in the management of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy: A pilot randomized controlled trial(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2018) Kurt, Seda; Can, GulbeyazPurpose: The current experimental study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of reflexology on the management of symptoms and functions of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in cancer patients. Method: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial in 60 patients (30 experimental and 30 control patients) who had chemotherapy-induced Grade II-IV peripheral neuropathy complaints from July 2013 to November 2015. Data were collected using the patient identification form, European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (EORTC-CIPN-20) form, and BPI (used for related chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy symptoms). Results: The majority of the patients were being treated for gastrointestinal or breast cancer and were primarily receiving Eloxatine- or taxane-based treatment. It was found that reflexology applications did not lead to differences in either group in terms of peripheral neuropathy severity and incidence (p > 0.05) and only led to improvement in sensory functions in the experimental group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: It was determined that reflexology is not an effective method in the management of patients' activity levels, walking ability etc. and motor, autonomic functions related CIPN, but reflexology is effective method in the management of patients' sensory functions related CIPN. Key Words: Peripheral neuropathy, reflexology, chemotherapy, EORTC QLQ-CIPN-20, BPI.
