Throughout history, women have been in a secondary position in terms of
social gender roles. This inequality has been visible mainly through the distinction
between the public and private spheres. In society, women were pushed into the
private sphere and they could not find the opportunity to play the role of wife and
mother. On the other hand, the male dominated the public sphere, and the public
sphere was coded as the area of activity of the male. The main goal of the struggle of
women living in the male-dominated system has been to break away from traditional
patterns in the private and public spheres and to provide equal and liberal conditions
for both sexes. Law, politics and women's movements have stepped in to ensure equal
conditions for both sexes and to help women get rid of unequal social roles. In this
study, the struggles of women to impose their existence in the public sphere and thus
to transform their positions in the private sphere, from the last period of the Ottoman
Empire to the republican period, and the relationship of these struggles with the
transformation of constitutional rights will be discussed.
