20. yüzyılın ortalarına gelindiğinde, sanatın merkezi artık Paris değil New
York’tur.
Expressionism, Which emerged in 1905, began to be heard all over Europe as
the first manifesto movement. Expressionist artists tried to reflect the expression,
which is the essence of art, to their Works of art more consciously. With the
influence of wars, the need for inner creation gained strength, and expressionist
scluptors such as Ernst Barlach and Wilhelm Lehmbruck in particular focused on
social issues. Expressionist sculptors, who tried to analyze and reflect the human
emotional state, used the body as a means of expression.
By the middle of the 20th century, the center of art was no longer Paris but
New York. In order to better understand Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism,
it is important to know the starting point. It was not easy for artists to express their
inner impules in the Fascist Europe of the 20th century. The Works have been
interpreted as ‘’degenarate’’. The art migration that look place in the middle of the
20th century corresponds to this period.
The body Image has been one of the indispensable elements of the art field
before Expressionism. The body image, which has changed in meaning and form
with the modern age, has been interpreted differently by the sculptors of each period.
The body was not only a shape and form fort he expressionist sculptors, but also
helped to reflect the atmosphere of the period and to understand and interpret human
feelings and thoughts.
In the thesis named Formal Attitude and Body Image in Western European
Expressionist Sculpture; Expressionism, which is used by Expressionist and Abstract
Expressionist sculptors to reflect the emotional change they experience in their inner
world and to analyze the expression of psychological tendency, will be examined,
and how the sculptors perceive the body and how it shapes it will be mentioned. At
the same time, expressionist tendencies in different branches of art will be included
in order to better understand the philosophy and functioning of expressionism.
In this context, literatüre review was made, catalogs and articles of artists
were examined. Within the text, which is limited to the sculpture art of the Western
European expressionist and abstract expressionist period, the approaches of the
artists to body image and the works that are subject of the research are examined.
Subjects and events handled through body image in sculpture works will be
examined by considering their periodic characteristics. Along with expressionism,
the changes of modern are sculptors and their works will also be discussed.
