S.; Puyan, F. Oz; Oz, F.; Erdogan, N.; Ceylan, S.; Yakupoglu, A.The aim of this study is to define the diagnostic role of Liqui-Prep (LP) technique for the diagnosis of thyroid lesions and to assess interobserver variabilities. In all, 98 thyroid FNA (fine needle aspiration) cytology samples from 83 patients for preoperative evaluation of thyroid nodules, prepared by the LP, were examined. The LP slides were independently evaluated by three pathologists and they were classified into the five categories according to the Bethesda system. The histopathologic diagnoses were grouped as follows: benign, follicular neoplasm, and malignant. Agreements between LP and histopathologic diagnoses were investigated using kappa values. Marginal homogenity and kappa tests were used for statistical analysis for the evaluation of the agreement between the pathologists and the interobserver variability of the thyroid aspiration cytology results. The presence of nucleoli, nuclear grooving, overlapping, intranuclear inclusion, and nuclear irregularity were recorded and scored on each case based on LP slide review. Concurrences between LP and the histologic diagnoses for the three pathologists were almost perfect (k = 0.798; k = 0.826; k = 0.880). When the observers were paired there was no significant difference from the diagnostic point of view. Interobserver agreement among the three pathologists was moderate. Initially diagnostic difficulties may occur because of the inadequate experience of the pathologists concerning the evaluation of the cytologic changes associated with this new technique. Liqui-Prep technique is useful for the cytologic diagnosis of the thyroid nodules. The nuclear irregularity was the most essential feature for the differentiation of malignant lesions from follicular neoplasm by the LP method. Diagn. Oz; Kutlu, K.In our study we investigated the effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and Angiotensin T, receptor blocker at low-doses which do not affect blood pressure and renal hemodynamia on the experimental diabetic nephropathy. Diabetes mellitus was induced by 50 mg/kg streptozotocin on Sprague-Dawley rats. Except for the patient control group, 2.5 mg/kg Enalapril (an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor) and 5 mg/kg Irbesartan (an Angiotensin T, receptor blocker) were given everyday via drinking water during six weeks period. After 24-hour urine collection, blood was withdrawn by cardiac puncture, and rats were sacrificed. Renal functions, histopathologic and electron microscopic alterations in renal tissues, and relative percent deposition of type IV Collagen were investigated. Diabetic nephropathy was determined with the increase of plasma glucose, HbA(9)C (P< 0. 000), urea, creatinin (P<0.005) and urinary protein, albumin, glucose (P<0. 000) inpatient control and Enalapril and Irbesartan treatment groups when compared to the healthy control group. Mesangiocellular proliferation, tubular basement membrane thickness, percentage of glomerular collagen accumulation reduced in treatment groups and glucose in urine in Enalapril group declined. Our findings suggest that renal protective effects of Enalapril and Irbesartan in the development of diabetic nephropathy were comparable.Öğe Extramedullary plasmacytoma in tongue: A rare entity(Springer, 2013) Tastekin, E.; Can, N.; Azatcam, M.; Puyan, F. OzHibernoma is a rare, benign, slow-growing soft tissue tumor. It was named after its resemblance to the brown fat found in hibernating animals. Due to its rich vascularity and magnetic resonance appearance, this tumor may mimic a liposarcoma before tissue diagnosis. Complete resection with meticulous hemostasis is enough for treatment. Malignant potential has not been demonstrated. Herein we present a case of hibernoma arising from the left groin in a young man. The clinical presentation, radiographic and histopathologic features of this rare benign soft tissue tumor are presented. This tumor is clinically important because it is indistinguishable from malignant lesions.Öğe An incidental diagnosis: a rare entity of primary uterine cervical lymphoma concurrent with endometrial adenocarcinoma(Springer, 2021) Usta, I.; Puyan, F. Oz; Tastekin, E.; Usta, U.; Ciftci, T.; Kutlu, A.A 9-year old male patient was admitted to our clinic for circumcision. Physical examination revealed a mass in the prepuce. After excision of the mass, histopathological examination was consistent with a mucoid cyst of the penile skin, which has been rarely reported. Pathologists and clinicians dealing with genitourinary system pathology should be familiar with this rarely encountered entity.Öğe Multiple cancers on a family with Li Fraumeni Syndrome: case report(Springer, 2021) Guvendikli, I.; Demirtas, E. N.; Celik, M.; Bulbul, B. Yilmaz; Puyan, F. OzContext. Papillary thyroid carcinoma(PTC)s are the indolent progressive tumours. Survivin is a unique bifunctional protein with cell cycle regulation and apoptosis inhibition. The expression of this protein has been shown to be increased in thyroid tumours correlated with aggressive behavior from well differentiated to anaplastic. Objective. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between immunohistochemically survivin expression and tumour-associated prognostic factors in papillary thyroid carcinomas. Design. In patients with thyroidectomy, we compared the clinicopathological findings and immunohistochemical positivity for survivin. Subjects and Methods. In 109 patients, sex, age, tumour size, histological tumour variant, tumour focality, tumour border pattern, tumour peripheral/intratumoural lymphocytic and stromal response, intraglandular spread, extrathyroideal spread, lymph node metastases, lymphocytic tiroiditis and relationships of these findings with survivin positivity were investigated. Results. When we indicated the tumour size and compared it with survivin expression, tumour size correlates with, survivin expression (p = 0.016). Survivin expression was correlated statistically significant with lymphovascular invasion, without stromal response and with intraglandular extension respectively (p<0.001, p = 0.043, p<0.001). No significant correlation was found between other clinicopathological parameters and survival. Conclusion. Few studies have investigated the relationship of survivin expression with prognosis in thyroid papillary carcinomas and showed that survivin was a poor prognostic marker. If its expression is detected in preoperative cytology smears, it may affects the surgical treatment strategy. When it is detected in the tissue, postoperative radioactive iodine treatment plan may be modified and the need for more aggressive follow-up may be considered.Öğe Synchronous bilateral breast cancer of distinct histomorphologic and intrinsic subtypes: a case report(Springer, 2020) Binboga, B.; Puyan, F.
