(Central Fisheries Research Inst, 2010) Camur-Elipek, Belgin; Arslan, Naime; Kirgiz, Timur; Oterler, Burak; Guher, Huseyin; Ozkan, Nurcan
In order to determine the relationships between the dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrates (both species number and individual number) and environmental variables, sampling was made at four different stations at monthly intervals during a year between March 2004 and January 2005 of Lake Gala which is a part of an important wetland and a national park in European part of Turkey (Enez/Edirne). Altogether, a total of 49 zoobenthic taxa which were grouped as Oligochaeta, Chironomidae, and Varia, comprised of 1,628 individuals in per m(2) at average were recognised in the sampling stations of the Lake. The present study showed that larval chironomids comprising 57% abundance of the total specimens are the biggest part of benthic macroinvertebrates. It is followed by oligochaetes and the group varia comprising 34% and 9% abundance, respectively. Also, it was seen changing that the composition of zoobenthic group dominancy in the Lake as time passes. Furthermore, according to Shannon-Wcaner index, species diversity for zoobenthic macroinvertebrate fauna of the lake was found as H'=1.21 at average. Also, similarities of the sampling stations and months, both the dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrates and physicochemical features were evaluated by using Bray-Curtis similarity index. According to Spearman correlation index, relationship between the number of individuals and some physicochemical variables such as temperature, turbidity (light permeability), and depth of the lake was determined statistically significant.

Development of a macroinvertebrate-based multimetric index for biological assessment of streams in the Sakarya River Basin, Turkey
(Springer, 2022) Odabasi, Deniz Anil; Odabasi, Serpil; Ergul, Halim Aytekin; Ozkan, Nurcan; Boyaci, Yunus Omer; Baykose, Ahmet; Kayal, Melih
The present study aimed to develop a multimetric index as a biological indication method of water quality using benthic macroinvertebrates for Turkey. A total of 207 operational taxa units were identified from 26 sampling sites through the employment of the multi-habitat method. Water was simultaneously sampled for both in-situ measurements and laboratory analysis in order to obtain the data on water chemistry. Ineligible metrics were excluded from the calculation process together with box-whisker plots and Kruskal-Wallis test (p < 0.05), considering the degree of overlap in the quartile limits (1 degrees-3 degrees). Among ten candidate metrics, four were considered suitable to form a multimetric index through Spearman correlation analysis. The core metrics were standardized with the 3(rd) quartile to obtain the index value. The index responded to a set of environmental variables, and split the ecological conditions into four categories as high, moderate, poor, and bad for the study area. Our results indicate that the multimetric index of the Sakarya River (MMIS) is an effective biological monitoring tool employing macroinvertebrates for biological monitoring in Turkey.

Ecological Analysis of Chironomid Larvae (Diptera, Chironomidae) in Ergene River Basin (Turkish Thrace)
(Central Fisheries Research Inst, 2010) Ozkan, Nurcan; Moubayed-Breil, Joel; Camur-Elipek, Belgin
In the present study, chironomid larvae were sampled periodically between the years 1995-96 during the one year at eight different localities of Ergene River Basin. A total of 60 chironomid taxa (325 individuals/m(2)) were recorded in the River and its tributaries (Ergene River Basin) during the sampling period. Also, it evaulated the larval chironomid assemblages in Meric-Ergene River Basin which is amongst the most important wetland area in European part of Turkey. Furthermore, it determined the physicochemical properties of the water to analyse the relationships between species composition of chironomid communities and environmental parameters. Structure of sediment at each sampling station of Ergene River Basin was revealed to determine the substratum preference of the larvae. It was that found sediment nutrient enrichment strongly influenced chironomid assemblage structure. Furthermore, main results due to species diversity, density of populations, similarities for the sampling stations and the substratum types were discussed. According to Shannon index, species diversity of the Basin was found as H'=1.41 at average. Also, Spearman index has indicated that significant correlations were found between chironomid larval densities and some environmental variables such as conductivity (r=-0.708), dissolved oxygen (r=+0.810), biological oxygen demand (r=+0.822), and chemical oxygen demand (r=+0.805) for P < 0.05.

The influence of leaf litter on the distribution of aquatic oligochaetes in the Tunca River (Edirne, Turkey)
(Springer, 2022) Yunlu, Melek Zeybek; Ozkan, Nurcan; Yildiz, Seray
This study was conducted in a portion of the Tunca River within Turkey's borders. Its aim is to investigate possible differences in Oligochaeta colonization in different leaf packages and to determine the impact of leaf litter on the distribution of aquatic oligochaetes. Simultaneously, the reasons for differences in Oligochaeta species colonization were investigated, and it was concluded that these differences were linked to the mesohabitat structure. Three stations were selected on the river for the study. Leaves from five different trees in the vicinity of these stations were gathered, packaged, and thrown into the water. When packing leaves, a 20 kg sack of potatoes was used, and a total of 25 packs were placed in localities. In addition, Oligochaeta samples were collected between May and October 2012 using a hand net. A total of 79 samples were obtained in areas of six different mesohabitats: Platanus orientalis leaf litter, Ulmus leavis leaf litter, Morus alba leaf litter, Juglans regia leaf litter, Buxus sp. leaf litter, and hand net samples. In the mesohabitats sampled, 751 specimens were identified, among them of 17 taxa and nine genera belonging to the family Naididae. Principal components analysis revealed the first two axes explained 89.3% of the total variance of the data. Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was associated with the J. regia leaf litter, and Psammoryctides albicola was associated with the P. orientalis leaf litter. Most species determined demonstrated apparent affinity with the Buxus sp. leaf litter mesohabitats.

INVESTIGATION OF COLONY FORMATION IN DIFFERENT LEAF PACKS OF CHIRONOMIDAE LARVAE IN EDIRNE TUNCA RIVER
    (Parlar Scientific Publications (P S P), 2018) Ozkan, Nurcan
This research was carried out between May and October 2012 at three different stations in the vicinity of Tunca River in the province of Edirne. In the study, walnut, mulberry and elm leaf types gathered from the surrounding trees and artificial boxwood and leaf leaves made of dry plane leaf which was spilled in the previous year were prepared. These packages were aimed for determining which leaf packs, stations and months in which Chironomidae larvae preferred and colony in the following months, how the leaf packs might have preferred them, and species diversity at stations in the following months. The largest colonization was in artificial boxwood leaf packaging; the least colonization was found in the mulberry leaves. This suggested that leaf packets are used for accommodation rather than feeding. Also the number of larvae was found high in August. Fifty different species of Chironomid larvae were found in the river.

THE INVESTIGATION OF LEAF PACKS ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF ODONATA AND ISOPODA FAUNA IN TUNCA RIVER, EDIRNE
    (Parlar Scientific Publications (P S P), 2022) Ozkan, Nurcan
This study was carried out to compare the abundance rates, species, and the number of individuals in colony formation of Odonata and Isopoda benthic fauna in different leaf packs. The study was carried out in Tunca River (Edirne). Three stations were selected in the river and 5 different leaf species were used for sampling. Odonata and Isopoda samples were collected from leaf packs between June 2012 and October 2012. The collected samples were brought to the laboratory by placing them in 70% ethyl alcohol and examined under a stereomicroscope. Then, the ANOVA test was used for the analysis of Odonata and Isopoda fauna according to leaf packs, station, and months, and 0.05 a statistical significance was taken as basis in all tests. When the difference was found significant, the reason was revealed by the Tukey test. Variance analysis test results revealed that the number of individuals in both Odonata and Isopoda differed only by leaf type (artificial boxwood). There was no difference according to station and months. Shannon Weaver indices was applied to leaf varieties and stations. A total of 8 taxa were found, 7 from Odonata and 1 from Isopoda. Species Gomphus flavipes (Charpentier, 1825), Gomphus vulgatissimus (Linnaeus, 1758), Ischnura elegans (Vander Linden, 1820), Orthetrum albistylum (Selys, 1848) and Platycnemis pennipes (Pallas, 1771) (Odonata) are new records for the Tunca River. In addition, some water parameters have been studied.
