Öğe Experimental investigation of a solar energy heating system under the climatic conditions of Edirne(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2008) Karacavus, Berrin; Can, AhmetSeasonal storage of solar energy to supply the heat requirement of buildings in Edirne (41 degrees 39'54 '' N) has been examined experimentally. Solar energy has been stored in a cylindrical underground storage unit. Measurement values have been recorded per hour by means of a computerized recorder between July 2005 and May 2006. Monthly average temperature values of the heat storage unit and the surrounding ground have been calculated through the measurement results. The transient heat transfer which takes place between the heat storage unit and the surrounding ground has been calculated by means of the QuickField finite-element analysis program. It has been determined that the most significant deviations between the theoretical and the experimental temperature values turn out to be in question during the heating period. The annual solar fraction of the solar energy heating system has been determined as 53% for space heating and 85% for domestic water heating. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. For this aim, a heating system was built to store solar energy in cylindrical water tank placed under ground via solar collector. In the present study it is obtained that energy saving was seen remarkably in Edirne in Turkey (41 degrees 39 ' 54 '' N) by storing solar energy to use it at other time considering that it would balance difference between consuming and generating energies. During the experimental study, temperature of heat storage unit and surrounding under ground were Measured. In the season of heat storage, efficiency of heat storage unit of cylindrical tank was obtained as 86-96% and it was determined that 89-100%, of total heat was obtained from the sun.Öğe Hydrogen production and storage analysis of a system by using TRNSYS(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2020) Karacavus, Berrin; Aydin, KadirIn this study, hydrogen production and storage were investigated. The Transient System Simulation Program (TRNSYS) and Generic Optimization Program (GenOpt) packages were combined for the design and optimization of a system that produces hydrogen from water and stores the hydrogen it produced in the compressed gas tank. The system design is based on the electricity grid. Electrical energy produced in photovoltaic (PV) panels was used to electrolyze water. The systems for Izmir, Istanbul and Ankara provinces which are in different climate zones of Turkey were optimized and the annual system performances based on the optimum angles were analyzed. For the mentioned provinces, the PV tilt angles which minimize electricity drawn from the grid at the electrolyzer are also investigated. The electrical energy produced in the photovoltaic panels, the hydrogen and oxygen amounts produced, the efficiency of the electrolyzer, the gas and pressure levels in the hydrogen tank were compared. According to the results of the analysis, the annual total power produced in photovoltaic panels is 42803.66 kW in Izmir, 42573.74 kW in Istanbul and 44613.95 kW in Ankara. Hydrogen levels produced in the system are calculated as 10488.39 m(3) year(-1) in Izmir, 9824.70 m(3) year(-1) in Istanbul, and 10368.65 m(3) year(-1) in Ankara. One of the systems used in heating and cooling of offices is the radiant system which can create a thermal environment at acceptable levels. In this study, general and local thermal comfort of an office with a dimension of 3 m x 6 m x 3.5 m, where two manikins are positioned next to each other, are numerically studied with the help of computational fluid dynamics. Two different models were created for analyses. In the first model, the panel was placed below a window whereas in the second it was positioned on the ceiling. For each model, analyses were carried out at different temperatures and with different panel heat fluxes. The compliance of the office's general and local comfort levels with ISO 7730 was evaluated taking into account results of analyses. The calculation revealed that general and local comfort levels for these models were not in compliance with ISO 7730 when the outside temperature was -10 degrees C. However, when the outside temperature was 3.3 degrees C and 10 degrees C, the general and local thermal values of both models were within acceptable limits.Öğe Optimization of solar domestic hot water system for certain climate zones of Turkey(Gazi Univ, Fac Engineering Architecture, 2017) Karacavus, BerrinThe optimization of a solar domestic hot water system (SDHWS) for the provinces in certain climate zones of Turkey was investigated in the present study. The optimum design of the system was divided to a three level structure. The simulation level (TRNSYS), the Generalized Pattern Search (GPS) optimization method Hooke-Jeeves Algorithm level (GenOpt) and the interface for the communication between those two levels (TrnOPT). Taking into account the financial (life cycle cost) analysis, the optimum collector area, the optimum collector slope and optimum hot water storage tank volume were determined for each province. The annual simulation of the SDHWS was accomplished with the determined optimum size and the monthly auxiliary heating rate, the monthly solar fraction and the monthly collector efficiency were calculated for each province. In the designed system, the highest auxiliary heating rate was determined 379.63 kWh/month in Hakkari on October and the lowest auxiliary heating rate was determined 177.48 kWh/month in Izmir on October. The lowest monthly solar fractions from the solar water heating system were calculated for Edirne as 8% in December and as 17% in January. The costs of meeting the annual auxiliary heating rate and the annual energy rate to load with electricity and natural gas were compared. The effects of increased utilization of the SDHWS in buildings on the energy supply of Turkey were addressed.Öğe Thermal and economical analysis of an underground seasonal storage heating system in Thrace(Elsevier Science Sa, 2009) Karacavus, Berrin; Can, AhmetEconomical analysis of the solar heating system with seasonal storage, which was established in Edirne (41 degrees 39 ' 54 '' N) in order to provide the heat requirement of buildings, has been fulfilled. Optimum collector area for the heating system has been determined. Total heat requirement of 69% has been met by means of heating system concerning the space heating and domestic water heating. In the accordance with the results of the economical analysis. the payback time of the heating system has been determined as 19-20 years. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
