Öğe Assessing health literacy, the factors affecting it and their relation to some health behaviors among adults(Allied Acad, 2017) Caylan, Ayse; Yayla, Kamil; Oztora, Serdar; Dagdeviren, Hamdi NezihIntroduction: Health literacy is an important factor in promotion of health and patient empowerment. This study aims at determining the health literacy levels and influencing factors in 20 to 64 years old individuals, registered to Family Health Centers in Edirne city center. Materials and methods: The study sample was comprised of 285 individuals, who were aged between 20 and 64 years and registered to 17 out of 20 Family Health Centers in Edirne city center. The participants completed a survey on their socio-demographic data as well as an Adult Health Literacy Measure including 23 questions. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation analysis, Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskall-Wallis H tests were used in analysing the results. A multivariate linear regression model was used to examine the independent effects of different predictors on health literacy. Results: Participants were 143 females (50.2%) and 142 males (49.8%). Their average age was 39.42 years. Their mean of Adult Health Literacy Measure scores was 13.26 where female participants had higher mean scores. The mean score for health literacy increased with an increase in education level, number of books read in a year, number of days reading a newspaper weekly and monthly household income. The findings of regression analysis indicated that male gender had 0.975 unit of negative effect on health literacy and decreased health literacy level. Being married and having university education had 1.079 and 1.445 units of positive effect respectively on health literacy thereby increasing its level. An increase of 1 unit in the number of days for reading a newspaper weekly led to a 0.241 unit of increase in health literacy. Conclusion: The mean score for health literacy which was calculated on a scale of 23, was 13.26 and it should be increased. The analysis indicated that education was the most important predictor.Öğe Effect of socioeconomic factors on Gastroenteritis during summer among children between 1-72 months(Drunpp-Sarajevo, 2012) Caylan, Ayse; Gucuk, Sebahat; Dallar, Yildiz; Sunay, DidemAim: Our aim is to determine the association between social factors and acute gastroenteritis occurred during summer, among children aged between 1 and 72 months and provide help to normal growth of children and contribute to taking preventive measures. Material and Method: It is a cross-sectional prospective case control study which was carried out between 2005 and 2006 June to August. 450 children with acute gastroenteritis that admitted to Ministry of Health Ankara Education and Research Hospital were recruited. Control group was constituted with 200 children that did not have acute gastroenteritis in the last one month. A questionnaire was filled out face to face with mothers. The data were analized by SPSS (Statistical Program for Social Sciences), version 12. Results: The mean age was 31.8 +/- 20.9 months in patient group, and 31.4 +/- 21.4 months in control group. Children with acute gastroenteritis had higher rates of incomplete vaccination. Children in patient group (67.3%) had higher rates of living in shanty than controls (45.5%) (p=0.0001). The duration of using vitamin supplementation was lower in the patient group. Conclusion: The rate of acute gastroenteritis increases with the lack of ORS knowledge, incomplete vaccination, inadequate vitamin intake and low socioeconomic status. Washing hands before preparing meal decreases the rate occurance in diarrhea.Öğe Evaluation of the Attitudes of the Students of the Faculty of Health Sciences towards Healthy Nutrition and Physical Activity(Duzce Univ, 2020) Onder, Omer Onder; Ozturk, Muhsin; Yildiz, Seyda; Caylan, AyseObjective: The foundations of a healthy life are laid during youth, and healthy nutrition and regular physical activity are not only two key determinants of health but also two main factors decreasing age-related health risks. Universities are the ideal environments for increasing this awareness and educating university students that constitute the majority of young population on healthy behavioral choices. This study aimed to evaluate the factors affecting the attitudes of the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences (Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation and Department of Nutrition and Dietetics) at a foundation university towards healthy nutrition and physical activity. Methods: The total number of students in the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation and Department of Nutrition and Dietetics was 467. The study aimed to reach the whole universe and was conducted with 339 students (73%) that consented to participate. Study data were collected via face-to-face surveys that covered the sociodemographic data form, demographic data questions of the modified survey by the University of North Florida on Diet and Exercise and the survey including the Body Image Scale. The study received an approval from the Scientific Researches Ethics Council of the School of Medicine of Trakya University (TUTF-BAEK 2019/163). Study data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 program. Significance level was p<0.05. Chi-square analysis was used for group comparisons as the data were categorical variables. Results: While the Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.91 in the original Body Image Scale, it was 0.959 in our study. In addition, while prediction point was 135 in the original scale, it was 134.5 according to our ROC analysis. 49.6% of students stated that they did not exercise; 27.1% of those associated it with lack of time while 17.1% cited lack of willpower. 54% of students considered their diets unhealthy. There was a statistically significant difference between lack of exercise and gender (p<0.05). 81% of females did not exercise at all while 19% of males did not exercise. Among students whose body image perception was below average, the number of those not exercising (n=52) was higher than those exercising (n=36), and this was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: According to results of this study, university students should be provided with awareness programs on healthy nutrition and exercise to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors.Öğe Learning styles of medical students and related factors(Bmc, 2023) Gayef, Albena; Caylan, Ayse; Temiz, Selahattin AlpBackgroundThe concept of learning style is quite important for teachers to teach, organize students' learning experiences, and accomplish educational goals. Motivation is one of the most important psychological concepts in education. Motivation is multidimensional and ranges from amotivation to extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. When students are motivated extrinsically, they enjoy striving toward rewards and goals which may differ from individual goals. Intrinsically motivated students enjoy exploring, learning, and curiosity-oriented academic efforts. Understanding learning styles can make it easier to create, modify, and develop more efficient curriculum and educational programs. It can also encourage students' participation in these programs and motivate them to gain professional knowledge This study aims to determine the learning styles of medical school students and to evaluate whether there is a relationship between their learning styles and academic motivation and the sociodemographic variables.MethodsIn this study a questionnaire containing socio-demographic factors, Grasha-Reichmann Learning Styles Scale, Academic Motivation Scale was filled out by 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th -year medical students of the 2019-2020 academic year. Frequency, percentage, mean, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and independent group t-test (for analyzing data with normal distribution) were applied. Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test, and Spearman correlation analysis were used for analyzing data without normal distribution.ResultsWe found that the mean of independent learning was the highest among the learning style dimensions, and the mean of the intrinsic motivation to know (IMKN) was the highest among the academic motivation dimensions. We found that there were significant relationships between independent learning and intrinsic motivation (IM), between avoidant learning and extrinsic motivation (EM) and between collaborative learning and IMKN, IM to accomplish things (IMAT) and IM to experience stimulation (IMES).ConclusionWe think that different teaching methods can be applied to strengthen collaborative learning, participant learning, and intrinsic motivation. We hope that this research will contribute to medical education on the subject of establishing appropriate teaching methods. Teachers have to plan and implement activities based on students' learning styles and academic motivation to encourage students to effectively participate in the classroom.Öğe Migraine headaches among university students using id migraine test as a screening tool(Bmc, 2011) Oztora, Serdar; Korkmaz, Osman; Dagdeviren, Nezih; Celik, Yahya; Caylan, Ayse; Top, Mehmet S.; Asil, TalipBackground: Migraine is a significant health problem, especially for the young people, due to its frequency and accompanying morbidity, causing disability and loss of performance. In this study, our aim was to determine the prevalence of migraine headaches among university students in Edirne, a Turkish city. Methods: In this cross-sectional and descriptive study, study population was composed of students registered to Trakya University in the academic year of 2008-2009. Out of these, 3694 of them accepted to participate. Participants who had two or more headaches in the last 3 months formed the headache group. Afterwards, two preliminary questions were applied to the headache group and participants with at least one affirmative response were asked to perform the validated ID-Migraine (TM) test. Results: The mean age of 3694 students participated in the study was 19.23 +/- 1.84 (17-39 years), with adolescents: adult ratio being 2.5:1. 1613 students (43.7%) did have at least two headaches in the last three months. Migraine-type headache was detected in 266 subjects (7.2%) based on the ID-Migraine T test. Of the migraine group, 72 were male (27.1%) and 194 were female (72.9%). There was no significant difference in migraine prevalence between adolescent and adult age groups. Conclusions: With a prevalence similar to adults, primary care physicians should be aware of the probability of migraine headaches in university students in order to maintain a successful school performance.Öğe The practice of self-medication in an urban population(Allied Acad, 2017) Oztora, Serdar; Nepesova, Gulnar; Caylan, Ayse; Dagdeviren, Hamdi NezihAim: The aim of this study was to determine the drug utilization of patients without consulting a doctor in Edirne. Methods: Out of 6133 patients over 18 y of age admitted to 19 Family Health Centers located in the city center, 36.8% (n=1781) agreed to participate. Patients with communication problems were excluded. A questionnaire prepared by the researchers was filled out face-to-face. Results: According to patient's responses, 62.5% (n=1113) of patients did not use any drugs without consulting a doctor, while 37.5% of them did (n=668). There was no significant difference between genders. Students, high-income group and postgraduates had the highest proportion of self-medication. For the reason of using drugs without consulting (n=668), 53.3% (n=356) said I used a previously successful drug, 25.6% (n=171) said it was an emergency and 10.8% (n=72) said drug is cheaper than consultation. Of these drugs, 88.5% (n=591) were pain killers, 51.5% (n=344) were cold medicines and 12.7% (n=85) were vitamins. Conclusion: Self-medication and over-the-counter drugs are significant problems resulting in irrational drug use. People with higher education and economic level seem to have a tendency in self-medication and irrational drug use, thus health education and health literacy should be emphasized and included in the curriculum in every education level, apart from formal education. While doctors play a key role in rational drug use, other health professionals like pharmacists should also be involved.Öğe Prevalence and Clinical Features of Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease in Western Turkey(Turkish Neuropsychiatry Assoc-Turk Noropsikiyatri Dernegi, 2022) Guler, Sibel; Caylan, Ayse; Turan, Nesrin; Dagdeviren, NezihIntroduction: We aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) in Western Turkey, which encompasses Edirne and its surrounding districts. Methods: In this study, 9887 individuals, able to communicate and agreed to participate in the study, were evaluated. The data was obtained by answering a face-to-face questionnaire consisting of 53 questions from volunteers living at 30 randomly selected family health centers in Edirne and its counties. The questionnaire included demographic information, questions to evaluate potential concomitant conditions, and questions regarding the symptomatology used in IPD diagnosis. Following the questionnaire, it was planned to determine the degree of IPD with the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and the Hoehn and Yahr scale (HY) clinical rating scale in patients diagnosed with IPD to assess disease severity in patients diagnosed with IPD Results: Of the 9887 individuals, 118 were diagnosed with IPD according to the questionnaire results from Edirne and its districts, and the prevalence of IPD was 1.2%. Approximately, 58.4% of the patients with IPD were male and 41.6% were female, which was not significantly different (p=0.214). Non-motor symptoms such as difficulty urinating, anxiety, depression, fatigue, REM sleep behavior disorder, and difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep were also examined in patients diagnosed with IPD. Depression was identified in 45.7% of the cases, while the control group was 4.3% (p=0.001). Fatigue was identified in 46.8% of the cases and control group was 3.5% (p=0.002). Conclusions: IPD prevalence studies will increase the awareness in the community and provide early diagnosis and treatment as well as serve as a basis to increased life expectancy, reduce morbidity, and improve life quality.Öğe The prevalence of essential tremor in Edirne and its counties accompanied comorbid conditions(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2019) Guler, Sibel; Caylan, Ayse; Turan, F. Nesrin; Dagdeviren, NezihObjective: We aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of Essential Tremor (ET) in Edirne and its districts, located in Western Thrace, which is the most western part of Turkey. Methods: In this study, 3008 individuals who could communicate and agreed to participate in the study were evaluated. To obtain the data from the applicants in 30 Family Health Centres in Edirne and its districts, a face-to-face questionnaire that consisted of 37 questions was prepared by the researchers. The questionnaire included general information, questions to evaluate potential concomitant comorbid conditions and questions regarding the symptomatology used in ET diagnosis, as well as questions to evaluate ET severity, was examined with the spiral test. Patients were classified by using the Washington Heights-Inwood Genetic Study of Essential Tremor (WHIGET) diagnostic and clinical evaluation scale. According to the diagnostic criteria for ET (used in participants who were examined and in those whose medical records were reviewed) were similar to those used in astudy conducted in Turkey. Results: Of 3008 individuals, 173 were diagnosed with ET according to the questionnaire results from Edirne and its districts, and the prevalence of ET was 5.8%. Approximately, 43.4% of the patients with ET were male, and 56.6% were female, which was not significantly different (p > 0.05). Participants with tremor related to alcohol withdrawal, hyperthyroidism, anxiety, depression other known causes of tremor were not considered to have ET. Thyroid disease was identified in 0.0% of the cases, and the control group was detected in 1.4%, which was not significantly different (p = 0.170). Psychiatric disease was identified in 0.0% of the cases, and the control group was detected in 1.3%, which was not significantly different (p = 0.271). Conclusions: ET prevalence studies will increase the awareness of the community and provide early diagnosis and treatment, as well as serve as a basis to reduce morbidity and improve the quality of life.Öğe The prevalence of restless legs syndrome in Edirne and its districts concomitant comorbid conditions and secondary complications(Springer-Verlag Italia Srl, 2015) Guler, Sibel; Caylan, Ayse; Turan, F. Nesrin; Dagdeviren, Nezih; Celik, YahyaWe aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of restless legs syndrome in Edirne and its districts, located in Western Thrace, which is the most western part of Turkey. In this study, 4003 individuals who could communicate and agreed to participate in the study were evaluated. To obtain the data from the applicants in 30 Family Health Centres in Edirne and its districts, a face-to-face questionnaire that consisted of 54 questions was prepared by the researchers. The questionnaire included general information, questions to evaluate potential concomitant comorbid conditions and questions regarding the symptomatology used in restless legs syndrome (RLS) diagnosis, as well as questions to evaluate insomnia and tension-type headache secondary to insomnia according to the ICD-II Criteria (International Classification of Sleep Disorders-II Criteria). Of 4003 individuals, 282 were diagnosed with RLS according to the questionnaire results from Edirne and its districts, and the prevalence of RLS was 7 %. Approximately, 47.9 % of the patients with RLS were male, and 52.1 % were female, which was not significantly different (p > 0.05). Anaemia was identified in 41.1 % of the cases and control group was detected in 19.4 %, which was significantly different (p < 0.001). Secondary insomnia was identified in 64.2 % of the cases with RLS and was not detected in 35.8 %, which was significantly different (p < 0.001). RLS prevalence studies will increase the awareness of the community and provide early diagnosis and treatment, as well as serve as a basis to reduce morbidity and improve the quality of life.Öğe Quality assessment of primary care guidelines in Turkey(Drunpp-Sarajevo, 2011) Artantas, Aylin Baydar; Kahveci, Rabia; Sunay, Didem; Caylan, AyseIntroduction: Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) are systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances. The Ministry of Health published 67 primary care guidelines in 2003. Considering the expected effect of CPGs on clinical practice, we could assume that the quality of such guidelines would have an effect on the quality of health care practice. However, there is only very limited knowledge available regarding evidence based practice in Turkey and no known study related to the published CPGs, their use or their quality. In this study, we assessed the quality of existing primary care CPGs, by using The Appraisal of Guidelines Research & Evaluation (AGREE) Instrument. Methods: 14 guidelines were selected based on the top ten conditions in The Burden of Disease Study of 2004. The AGREE Instrument was translated into Turkish. The quality of the guidelines was assessed by 4 appraisers. Results: The mean rating scores of the domains, based on the AGREE Instrument were; Scope and purpose: 87.9%, stakeholder involvement: 62.2%, rigour of development: 51.2%, clarity and presentation: 66.4%, applicability: 57.2% and editorial independency: 54.5%. 6 guidelines out of 14 were recommended by all the appraisers, whereas 8 were not recommended at least by one of the appraisers. Conclusions: This is the first study of appraising quality of published guidelines in Turkey. This study is valuable for indicating the quality of current published guidelines and adds to the limited amount of knowledge in Turkey about how to improve guidelines.Öğe Residents' views about family medicine specialty education in Turkey(Bmc, 2010) Uzuner, Arzu; Topsever, Pinar; Unluoglu, Ilhami; Caylan, Ayse; Dagdeviren, Nezih; Uncu, Yesim; Mazicioglu, MumtazBackground: Residents are one of the key stakeholders of specialty training. The Turkish Board of Family Medicine wanted to pursue a realistic and structured approach in the design of the specialty training programme. This approach required the development of a needs-based core curriculum built on evidence obtained from residents about their needs for specialty training and their needs in the current infrastructure. The aim of this study was to obtain evidence on residents' opinions and views about Family Medicine specialty training. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The board prepared a questionnaire to investigate residents' views about some aspects of the education programme such as duration and content, to assess the residents' learning needs as well as their need for a training infrastructure. The questionnaire was distributed to the Family Medicine Departments (n = 27) and to the coordinators of Family Medicine residency programmes in state hospitals (n = 11) by e-mail and by personal contact. Results: A total of 191 questionnaires were returned. The female/male ratio was 58.6%/41.4%. Nine state hospitals and 10 university departments participated in the study. The response rate was 29%. Forty-five percent of the participants proposed over three years for the residency duration with either extensions of the standard rotation periods in pediatrics and internal medicine or reductions in general surgery. Residents expressed the need for extra rotations (dermatology 61.8%; otolaryngology 58.6%; radiology 52.4%). Fifty-nine percent of the residents deemed a rotation in a private primary care centre necessary, 62.8% in a state primary care centre with a proposed median duration of three months. Forty-seven percent of the participants advocated subspecialties for Family Medicine, especially geriatrics. The residents were open to new educational methods such as debates, training with models, workshops and e-learning. Participation in courses and congresses was considered necessary. The presence of a department office and the clinical competency of the educators were more favored by state residents. Conclusions: This study gave the Board the chance to determine the needs of the residents that had not been taken into consideration sufficiently before. The length and the content of the programme will be revised according to the needs of the residents.Öğe Use of Youtube in Medical Education(Duzce Univ, Fac Medicine, 2021) Gayef, Albena; Caylan, AyseThe use of technologies is gradually increasing in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education. The internet has become not only an easily accessible resource for health services but also the biggest and latest source of medical knowledge. In this framework, Web 2.0 sites such as YouTube have become useful sources of information, and they are widely used by medical students as a learning resource. Educators should promote the use of YouTube particularly as a self-guiding method to enhance students' learning. YouTube provides an affordable and useful communication tool that students can access at any time. We believe that YouTube will continue to provide the skills and information needed in the learning processes in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in the future as well.
