Çalışmamız sonucunda, polikliniğe başvuran DEHB'li çocuklardabozulmuş beslenme davranışları ve yüksek oranlarda obezite bulunabileceği saptanmıştır.Öğe Disturbed eating behavior and obesity in drug naive children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(Cumhuriyet Univ Tip Fak Psikiyatri Anabilim Dali, 2019) Aykutlu, Hasan Cem; Gorker, IsikObjective: In recent studies, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was found to be linked with disturbed eating behavior and obesity. However, more studies needed to assess this relationship in pediatric age group. Therefore, eating behavior, dietary habits and obesity prevalence were evaluated in children who were newly diagnosed with ADHD. Methods: Eighty-six children with ADHD between the ages of 6 and 9 without medical treatment and chronic medical disease were included in the study group. 86 age and sex matched children without chronic medical and psychiatric disease were obtained as the control group. Sociodemographic Data Form, Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ), the Turgay DSM-IV Based Disruptive Behavior Disorders Child and Adolescent Rating and Screening Scale (T-DSM-IV-S) and Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children were applied to all cases. Weight and height of all cases were measured. Weight and height z scores, body mass index percentiles were calculated. Results: CEBQ desire to drink subscale scores were found significantly higher in ADHD group than controls. CEBQ food responsiveness, emotional overeating and desire to drink subscale scores were found as positively correlated with T-DSM-IV-S ADHD total scores in ADHD group. It was found that children with ADHD eat more often, prefer to consume less water than controls. Higher rates of obesity and overweight, lower rates of underweight were found statistically significant in ADHD group. Discussion: Our findings provide evidence that children who are newly diagnosed with ADHD could have impaired eating behaviors, high rates of obesity and overweight. Therefore, it is important to evaluate growth measures and dietary habits in this population.Öğe The Effect of Covid-19 Pandemic on Preschoolers' Mental Health in Turkey(Springer, 2023) Dereli, Fatih; Aykutlu, Hasan Cem; Kurtca, Tugba TurkThe aim of this study is to determine the incidence of mental health problems among preschool-age children in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic and investigate the relationship between these problems and pandemic-related factors, considering that the pandemic has impacted society, institutions, families, and family members differently. The research was designed using a descriptive research model while the sample was determined by the maximum diversity sampling method. The participants included 414 parents, and 207 girls and 207 boys aged between 4 and 7 years. The data were obtained through a Demographic Information Form, The Questionnaire of Experience - Thoughts During the Pandemic, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The results showed that preschoolers were at risk of experiencing mental health problems during the pandemic. In particular, children who could not attend distance education and were from families that experienced economic difficulties during the pandemic were more likely to have mental health problems. Furthermore, children whose families an incorrect ideas about the pandemic were more likely to exhibit conduct problems. Gender, home location (urban or rural), and the type of school attended (state or private) had no significant association with the children's mental health. Overall, the study shows that preschool children were at risk of mental health problems during the pandemic. The risk factors that may be particularly relevant were also identified.Öğe Gifted Children and Psychiatric Disorders: Is the Risk Increased Compared With Their Peers?(Sage Publications Inc, 2024) Aykutlu, Hasan Cem; Dereli, Fatih; Turan, Bahadir; Tuerk Kurtca, Tugba; Dursun, Onur BurakThis study examined the prevalence and correlates of psychopathology in gifted children (GC) and explored whether giftedness confers protection or risk for mental health problems. We used a comparative design to analyze a population-based sample of 100 GC and 100 controls matched by age and sex in Turkey. We assessed psychiatric diagnoses with the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA), a valid diagnostic tool for child and adolescent mental health, and measured resilience and temperament with standardized scales. GC and controls did not differ significantly in the frequency of psychiatric disorders. However, GC showed lower resilience and higher negative reactivity and activity than controls. Negative reactivity was a significant predictor of psychopathology in GC. Sex did not moderate the effects of giftedness on mental health outcomes, resilience, or temperament. Our findings suggest that GC may have increased vulnerability to stress and reduced coping skills. We highlight the need to identify and support GCs who experience mental health problems and face psychological challenges. Our results emphasize the importance of early intervention and prevention to enhance resilience and well-being in this population. Future research should investigate the underlying mechanisms and develop tailored strategies to support the mental health and well-being of GC.Öğe How Did the Pandemic Affect Autistic Children and Their Families? Challenges and Psychosocial Impacts(Galenos Publ House, 2023) Aykutlu, Hasan Cem; Guneydas Yildirim, Burcu; Bozatli, Leyla; Kose, Ekin Beyza; Gorker, IsikAim: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are especially vulnerable to the pandemic due to their need for routine and difficulty in adapting to change. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychosocial impact of the Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on children diagnosed with ASD and their families and the challenges they faced during this period. Materials and Methods: We surveyed 85 parents of children with ASD aged 3-18 years, who were followed up in our clinic between the years of 2020 and 2021. We assessed ASD families' pandemic impact with the Child and Adolescent Reactions to Stressful Situations-Autism Family Adaptation and Resilience items. Parents answered the questionnaire online or by phone. Results: The mean age of the children was 10.3 +/- 4.1 years, 65 were boys and 20 were girls. 10.6% of the families had a medical emergency during the pandemic. The most common behavioral problems were anger, difficulty in concentrating, and hyperactivity. 37.6% of the children could not receive educational support, 74.1% could not receive treatment, 31.1% had difficulty in reaching a doctor, and 7.8% had difficulty in affording treatment. Furthermore, 33% of the children spent more than 4 hours a day on screens. 61.2% of parents rated the pandemic quarantine process as more difficult than before. Conclusion: The pandemic disrupted the daily routines, special education, rehabilitation, and health care services of children with ASD. It also increased their behavioral problems. Therefore, recognizing and addressing the psychological needs of children with special needs, such as ASD, will be an important part of the response to future disasters.Öğe The Probable Prevalence and Sociodemographic Characteristics of Specific Learning Disorder in Primary School Children in Edirne(Turkish Neuropsychiatry Assoc-Turk Noropsikiyatri Dernegi, 2017) Gorker, Isik; Bozatli, Leyla; Korkmazlar, Umran; Karadag, Meltem Yucel; Ceylan, Cansin; Sogut, Ceren; Aykutlu, Hasan CemIntroduction: The aim of this study was to research the probable prevalence of Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) in primary school children in Edirne City and the relationships with their sociodemographic characteristics. Methods: The sample of our study was composed of 2,174 children who were educated in primary schools in second, third, and fourth grades in the academic year 2013-2014 in Edirne City. The teachers and parents of these children were given Specific Learning Difficulties Symptom Scale, Learning Disabilities Symptoms Checklist (teacher and parent forms), and sociodemographic data forms to fill in. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the risk factors for SLD. Results: Our study revealed that the probable prevalence of SLD was 13.6%; 17% for boys and 10.4% for girls. Reading impairment was 3.6%, writing impairment was 6.9%, and mathematic impairment was 6.5%. We determined that consanguineous marriages, low income, history of neonatal jaundice were found as risks for SLD; born by caesarean, developmental delay of walking, and history of neonatal jaundice were found as risks for mathematic impairment. A history of learning difficulties of parents was a risk factor for forming SLD and subtypes. Conclusion: Our findings were consistent with other study results about the prevalence of SLD. The relationships between the probable prevalence rates and sociodemographic data were discussed.
