The impact of collaborative output tasks on efl learners grammatical competence

This study investigated the effectiveness of two collaborative output tasks, dictogloss and text reconstruction task, in improving EFL learners’ grammatical competence. Passive voice and if conditionals (Type 1, 2 and 3) were chosen as the target forms since they are considered as challenging for second language (L2) learners. The study involved 28 participants who were divided into an experimental group, which engaged in collaborative tasks, and a control group instructed through traditional teaching methods. A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test research design was employed and the experimental group completed two dictogloss and two text reconstruction tasks over a four-week period. According to the results of the analysis, the experimental group outperformed the ones in the control group, which indicates the efficiency of the two collaborative tasks. Additionally, following the treatments, the study aimed to explore students’ perceptions of the collaborative tasks through interviews with three students and reflective journals from all the participants. The results showed that most students held positive views about the use of these tasks whereas some students expressed a preference for using more traditional grammar exercises such as fill-in-the-blanks.
