The province of Edirne covers an area of approximately 6,300 km
2
, which is
located in the Thrace section of the Marmara Region, between the north latitudes of
40-42 degrees and the east meridians of 26-27 degrees. The territory of the city is
surrounded by the Bulgarian border in the north, Kırklareli and Tekirdağ in the East,
the Aegean Sea in the South, and the Greek borders in the west. Its northern parts
include the western parts of the Istranca Mountains. Although the city of Edirne has a
very old structure, there is no definitive information about when and by whom the
city was founded. Many sources suggest that Edirne may have been founded by
Odris, the largest in the Thracians. Edirne has been the fusion point of many cultures
and civilizations due to its geographical and strategic location in the historical
process. The traces of many cultures are seen in the city that was the capital of the
Ottoman Empire for 92 years.
With this research, I tried to examine these values in the historical process in
order to reveal the cultural values of Edirne. I wanted to tell the richness of the
handicrafts seen in Edirne with examples. I aimed to illustrate the differences by
making comparisons with various provinces. I wanted to bring solutions to the
problems of these arts which have been reflected in the historical process from the
past to the present. While analyzing Edirne's folkloric clothing and variety of clothes,
I found that the city had different patterns of clothing developing in its own potential.
In the light of these differences, I tried to investigate the human and commercial
aspects of the clothing culture in Edirne.
