Araştırmaya katılan hastaların yaş ortalaması 61,25±11,19 yıl, %63,1’i kadındı.
This descriptive and cross sectional study was conducted to determine the use of
complementary and alternative medicine for those diagnosed with hypertension and their
attitude concerning complementary and alternative medicine.
The study was carried out with 290 patients who are hypertensive and have resorted to a
state hospitals’ cardiology and internal diseases clinics. Data were collected with “Patient
Information Form” and “Attitude Towards Complementary and Alternative Medicine Scale”.
The mean age of the patients was 61.25±11.19 years and 63.1% of the patients were
women. 45.5% of them were diagnosed as hypertensive in last 1-5 years, 47.9% of them had
other chronical diseases.
It was found that 80% of the patients were aware of complementary and alternative
medicine, 59% of them heard it from people around them who did not have a medical license;
64.8% of them believed that complementary and alternative medicine methods were helpful;
and 56.9% of them stated that they used these methods, in addition to hypertension treatment.
All of the patients who used these methods stated that they prefered herbal methods; mostly
lemon (80.6%) and garlic (41.2%). 63% of them who were using complementary and
alternative medicine methods were not sharing the information with doctors or medical staff.
The patients’ mean score on “Attitude Towards Complementary and Alternative
Medicine Scale” was 23.05±5.80. The positive attitudes of the patients about complementary
and alternative medicine tended to increase, as their age increased (p=0.029). The patients
with primary or lower educational level (p=0.048) and the patients actively using these
methods (p=0.038) had more positive attitudes towards these methods.
Since the complementary and alternative medicine methods can cause adverse effects, it
is suggested that health care workers should ask about the use of these methods and give
importance to patient education.
