There are lots of protecting groups and methods to protect alcohols. Protection of alcohols with silyl groups (tert-butyldimethylsilyl, trimethylsilyl, tert-butyldiphenylsilyl, etc.) is a very important method in organic synthesis. These silyl groups have some advantages; they can be prepared easily, they can stand so many reaction conditions and they can be easily deprotected. Silyl ethers can be prepared in very different ways according to the structure of the alcohols. So many methods have been developed for having alcohols after deprotection of silyl ethers. Generally, to deprotect the silyl groups, the reagents that have floride ion are used. For example; Bu4N+F-, KF, HF, BF3, LiBF4 can be used. But for being these reagents are too expensive and for giving harmful side products, an alternative and with mild conditions methods are being developed. The aim of this study is to show that FeCl3/SiO2 catalyst can be used instead of floride ions while obtaining alcohols from silyl ethers.
