Abstract A node to node data transfer route is followed in wireless sensor networks to transfer the data from source node to the target node. The process of defining the nodes in which the data will pass through and reach to the target source is known as routing. The main purpose of defining the routing algorithm is to deliver the data by using the shortest way possible with minimum energy consumption. Many energy efficient algorithms for data routing are given in the literature. In this study, after a short review about energy efficient data routing algorithms in wireless sensor networks, a novel genetic based approach which also covers some features of well-known LEACH (Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) and PEGASIS (Power-Efficient GAthering in Sensor Information Systems) algorithms is presented. In this thesis study, a genetic based algorithm approach, INGABEEC (Internal Genetic Algorithm Based Energy Efficient Clusters), is used to optimize the lifetime of wireless sensor networks. The proposed one is a cluster based method as LEACH and is an application of PEGASIS technology into GABEEC method. A genetic algorithm is used to maximize the lifetime of the network. The method has two stages; installation and communication. Clusters are generated and Chain (a tree structure) in each cluster also is organized at installation stage. The clusters stay constant during the network lifetime. There are cluster heads that change dynamically at every round on these constant clusters. The second phase is communication and each node transmits its data packet to destination node which is selected earlier. A simulator is developed to verify the proposed method. The method is simulated and the received results are compared with other studies. It is shown that the proposed method is generating better results than other published methods.
